The Business of Art
February 1
The Business of Art is a very powerful seminar that will take you slowly by the hand and introduce you to all sorts of ways to make money from your creative endeavors as we break down those  misconceptions and barriers about making money from your art.
This is a must seminar for  those potentially successful artists as well as those just starting out who have  a fear of selling their work directly to potential clients.  It is ideal for  those who don't feel their work is strong or good enough, more often than not  based on lack of confidence. And for those who just want to be in the studio and will make any excuse not to make that phone call or go visit that gallery, usually out of fear of rejection, stop sharpening that pencil or watering that  plant and call and make a reservation for  THE BUSINESS OF ART

Valentine's Concert with Dick Smith and Friends

The "Broadway Musical" has been an exciting part of American cultural life for over a century. A trip to New York to see the shows is always a treat, but this year you only need to travel as far as Round Top, Texas to hear the best of Broadway.  Pianist/singer Dick Smith has spent a lifetime perfecting his interpretations of the music of America s greatest Broadway musicals. With performances by his daughter Ryan Smith and a star studded cast of guests artists including Charles Whitaker, Will Lynde, and guest performers from the recent Zack Theater production of Le Miz.

After the performance you can join the Festival Hill staff and friends on the Concert Hall stage for a reception with refreshing drinks and delectable culinary treats from the Festival Kitchen. During the reception there will be an opportunity to purchase a book of your choice for the Adopt-a-Book program to be placed in the Festival Institute Fine Arts and Humanities Library and a chance to bid on special silent auction items. 2014 Annual Quilt Exhibit - Red and White and a Bit of Another Color
February 10 - 23

Red and White showcases crisp color combinations across a range of quilts, embroidered redwork spreads, study textiles and quilt blocks.  With one notable exception, all textiles on display are red and white, though, occasionally, a bit of another color (or two) also appears!

"Red and white quilts have been prominent since the 1840s," said Kate Adams, quilt curator at the Briscoe Center. "Two-color quilts became popular in part because of the availability of fabric and the color fastness of Turkey red cotton, but also because of concurrent trends such as the turn-of-the-century fashion for red on white outline embroidery known as redwork."  Some of the quilts and most of the redwork examples have never before been publicly displayed.

James Dick, Piano Recital
February 22
Steinway artist James Dick has brought to life the works of classical composers for audiences from New York's Carnegie Hall to Academic Capelle in St. Petersburg, Russia. Dick' s playing melds modern-day energy and technique with an Old World graciousness and civility, resulting in a passionate sound that keeps audiences engrossed.  From his early years as prize winner of some of the world's most prestigious piano awards to his current successful career as an international guest artist and the founder of a distinguished musical education institute, James Dick is well known to music lovers as a man of great talent, vision and class.  James Dick's repertoire includes some of music's most-loved works: Beethoven's Concerto No. 3 in C minor, Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, Tchaikovsky's Concerto No. 1 in B-flat. But he has another foot firmly planted in the future, as he champions contemporary composers and their music. James Dick has commissioned or premiered works by such luminaries as Claude Baker, Stephen Barber, Malcolm Hawkins, Benjamin Lees, Sergio Molina, Chinary Ung, and Dan Welcher.  At 6:00 pm Dinner at Menke House Dining Hall: $50.70 (includes tax and service fee.)
